The princess cut is a square brilliant with sharp, pointed corners. Seen from the side it looks like an inverted pyramid, and its chevron-shaped pavilion facets give a bright, crisp sparkle with a pattern of crosses across the table. It is the most popular square shape and a staple for solitaires, studs and modern line work.

Two practical points set it apart. First, the corners are the thinnest and most exposed part of the stone, so princess cuts should be set with prongs or a bezel that cover all four. Second, its outline makes it one of the most efficient shapes to set side by side; princesses sit flush in channel settings with no gaps between stones.

Most buyers want a ratio between 1.00 and 1.05, so the stone reads as a true square. Check this from the report measurements, since a slightly rectangular princess is easy to see next to square stones. Because it is a brilliant cut, a princess hides colour and small inclusions better than a step cut.

Every certified princess carries an IGI or GIA report and a laser inscription. We supply the trade only, from our Los Angeles office. Select the stones you need and send a request for pricing and availability.
