At two carats an oval has a long, open face, and its outline is the first thing anyone notices. Shoulders that are too flat or too round, or a ratio that drifts far from what the setting was drawn for, are much easier to see than they were at one carat. Read the measurements on each report and calculate the ratio before you compare grades.

The bow-tie also grows with the stone. A faint shadow in a 1 carat oval can become a clear dark band across a 2 carat table. It does not appear on any certificate, so judge it from images and video, and compare a few stones of similar weight side by side. Some buyers accept a light bow-tie in exchange for a better ratio; others will not.

Colour shows more at this size too, especially toward the tips where the stone is thinnest. If your customers are sensitive to warmth, filter one grade higher than you would for a round. Every certified oval carries an IGI or GIA report and a laser inscription. We sell to the trade only, from our Los Angeles office, and reply to every request with pricing and availability.

Is the bow-tie worse in larger ovals?

It is easier to see, because the table is bigger. Judge it from images; it is not graded on the certificate.

Why does colour show more in an oval?

Elongated shapes concentrate colour toward the tips. Many buyers choose one colour grade higher than for a round.
