A 1 carat emerald cut tends to face up smaller than a 1 carat oval of the same weight. Step cuts carry more of their weight in depth and in the corners, so the visible table is compact. Many customers do not mind; they choose the shape for its lines, not its spread. But it is worth setting expectations if they have been looking at ovals.

Because the weight sits in depth, compare stones by their measurements line rather than weight alone. Two 1.10 ct emeralds can differ in length and width enough to change how they sit in a basket. Work out the length-to-width ratio from the report and use the 1 mm preview grid to see the outline at true proportion.

Clarity matters even at this size. A step-cut table offers nowhere for an inclusion to hide, so many jewelers start their search at VS and above. At one carat, emeralds also pair well as side stones for a larger centre; if you are building a three-stone ring, add the candidates to one request so we can quote them together. Certified stones carry an IGI or GIA report and a laser inscription.

Does a 1 carat emerald cut look smaller than other shapes?

Usually, yes. Step cuts hold more weight in depth, so the face-up area is smaller than an oval of the same weight.

What clarity should I look for in a 1 carat emerald cut?

Many jewelers start at VS, because the open table shows inclusions more than a brilliant cut does.
