A pear combines a rounded end with a single point, and it is cut with a brilliant facet pattern, so it keeps plenty of sparkle while giving an elongated, directional outline. It works as a ring centre, a pendant and, in matched pairs, as drop earrings. Worn point toward the fingertip it makes the hand look longer.

Symmetry is the first thing to check. The two shoulders should mirror each other, the rounded end should not be flat or squared off, and the point should line up with the centre of the rounded end. A pear that is slightly lopsided is obvious once it is set, even when the grades are good.

Length-to-width ratio is a matter of taste. Around 1.45 to 1.75 covers most orders; lower looks plump, higher looks slender. Like ovals, pears show a bow-tie across the middle, so compare images rather than relying on the report. The point is also the most exposed part of the stone and should sit in a protective prong or V-tip.

Every certified pear carries an IGI or GIA report and a laser inscription. We sell to the trade only, from our Los Angeles office. Send a request and we reply with pricing and availability.

What ratio is typical for a pear shaped diamond?

Roughly 1.45 to 1.75. Lower ratios look fuller, higher ratios look slimmer.

Do pear shapes have a bow-tie?

Most do, as with ovals. Judge its strength from images, since it is not graded on the certificate.
